‘All those silly things – do them’: Guruzeta’s journey from rehabilitation to goals with the Basque club

Thehe debut appearance the Athletic striker played in England, an young appearing for the reserve team against German opponents at Adams Park in September 2015, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he played in the country, against the English side two months later, he scored. Another occasion, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, well, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the city to play against the Red Devils at Leigh’s ground in that year, he scored again. An excellent finish, also. “Truly,” he states, “it ranks among my finest I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what they had to do: they took him off.

“I became very upset,” the forward admits, before breaking into laughter. “There must be a video somewhere. Our match against United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: my contract wasn’t finalized agreement, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. No confirmation on the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about Manchester United, the typical thing. I have no idea how true it was, but supposing an offer came, I’d have chosen to stay at Athletic. I feel lucky to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the facility, the Basque Country, the morning session is set to begin; following that, the short journey to Loiu and another flight to England, now to face Newcastle in the Champions League on midweek. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for the team, due in part to the requirements of competing at this level. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in European competition. But, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation within him.

In the three years since he had rejoined the team, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates a domestic final by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway flanked by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the club’s first trophy in 40 years. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are unique and returning after absence in a long period. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.

Guruzeta thought it hard enough just to break into the senior squad and that proved true. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, the forward is from the Antiguoko academy, the Donostiarra team that developed the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he went through a serious knee problem, the cut, a drop in category and a recall before he could earn his place, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the European competition.

“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the senior squad but each step you advance through you’re remaining and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in half a dozen appearances between his first game and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I tear my cruciate.

“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as something positive because it forced me to alter the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You cultivate routines previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then head home, typical youth behavior. At Lezama, you have everything, so do everything. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.

“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact countless occasions. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: I had slender legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; you have to be too.”

Game time is essential. The striker moved in tears in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. At Sabadell in that season, he netted three goals in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and should the time come the requirement appears in your position, a return could happen. You have to be ready. When they decided to call again, it was a dream come true. The trophy success, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Understandably he remarks this is to be enjoyed. All the more so after the previous season which, on occasions, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
