Celebratory Displays along with a Cheer for Life: Israeli Citizens Delight at Agreement to Return Hostages
The announcement of an agreement expected to result in the freeing of hostages held in the Gaza Strip for over two years has generated delight and comfort throughout Israel.
An organization which has campaigned for the return of Israeli captives in Gaza voiced “profound gratitude” for what it called an “historic breakthrough”.
The agreement—still requiring agreed upon Israel’s war cabinet—will see the release of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 deceased captives in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners imprisoned for life in Israeli prisons plus 1,700 individuals from the Gaza region.
So far, 148 hostages have come back—most as part of earlier truce agreements—51 bodies have been recovered while eight hostages have been rescued.
Jubilant Scenes at Hostages Square
Jubilant scenes took place in Hostages’ Square in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people assembled before the agreement’s signing.
The gathering began clapping and moving to music beneath US and Israeli flags—one woman displaying a placard saying: “We adore Trump.”
“This is a wondrous day,” the woman said.
Another, Yael, aged 50, cried while observing the people celebrating.
“I’m very excited—it is such a comfort,” she stated. “We need to see them come back home to their families.”

Relatives Rejoice with Fireworks
The mom and sibling of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the news of his impending homecoming.
“They are returning!... Matan is coming home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed while holding her child.
Viki Cohen, the parent of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, shared online: “My son, you are returning home.”
The joy could be felt in the streets of Tel Aviv following the news.
Freed Hostages Say Prayers and Toasts
Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari celebrated with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of thankfulness, then toasting “L’chaim”, meaning “for life”. She has advocated for the freedom of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their sibling Liran Berman wrote: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You are coming back.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was taken hostage on 7 October 2023, with her remains found in a tunnel in Gaza almost a year later. He has been joining other captives’ relatives in pushing for a deal which ensures the homecoming of everyone still being held in Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is actually happening. We have waited for such a long time and now it’s here,” he said.
He said he was “shattered” that his cousin will not be among those returning to their homes but was “glowing with joy” for the families of the hostages who are finally returning.
Eitan Horn was seized from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel together with his sibling.
Cautious Optimism from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, remarked she felt like she was living “in a dream”.
“We’re more than grateful to President Trump and everything he has accomplished on our behalf. It seems that this could be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan seems nearer than before,” she commented.
But she cautioned that it was still too soon to rejoice.
“Before the final captive returns, we won’t open the bubbly. We’re going to keep fighting... until the end,” she affirmed.
“So many things might occur up to the final instant so this is why we’re being so, so careful. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who was involved in the work and make sure this agreement is done... We shall rejoice only once we have the last hostage safely home.”
Eitan was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel together with his sibling Iair, who was released from detainment in a ceasefire deal earlier this year.
